While out and about la couple weeks ago having a taste or two, one of the wines that was purchased and taken home was a 2011 Zinfandel from Passagno Winery on River Road in Monterey County. It was chosen and opened the other night with dinner.
The Zinfandel for this wine comes from San Benito County and the Vineyard is located at the base of the northeastern foothills of San Benito County. The Idyll Times Vineyard is sheltered from the winds of “the Mistral” and during the growing season has warm days and temperate nights. The soil is thin, sparse and shallow which restricts root development and canopy growth. These conditions are ideal for the fickle and sometimes overly vigorous Zinfandel grape.
To quote the Pessagno website;
THE WINEMAKING
Zinfandel vines are notorious for uneven ripening, but the 2011 vintage was picked in one day. Fermented in small lots with a 25-day maceration period, the young wine was then pressed directly into French oak barrels for 11 months of aging.

The nose shows aromas of sweet purple fruits, boysenberries and tea and has nice fruit flavors of plumb, blackberry, blueberry and a little strawberry and a little stewed fruit sweetness. Nicely integrated soft tannins and a easy smooth finish. This is a nicely slightly understated version of a classically styled Zin that can be paired with smoked or BBQ ribs, Chicken, sausages, brisket or spaghetti & meatballs, pizza, and grilled or marinated steaks and burgers. Basically a great food wine that will pair very well with many foods.
A great drinking wine that was very much enjoyed with dinner that rated a 6+ and at **** is a cracking BBQ season wine (or winter warmer). So head on down to the tasting room and get some of your own and while your there have a taste of the complete line up at Pessagno Winery tasting room.
Happy Wine Adventures,
Cheers,
